Dr. Amy Myers MD
Dr. Amy Myers is a physician, teacher and author with extensive training in Functional Medicine, Integrative Medicine and Nutrition. She was raised by enlightened parents who impressed upon her the power of community, nutrition and travel. Her mother was an artist, avid jogger and yoga instructor who enjoyed growing a garden and making homemade yogurt and breads. Her father a university professor of Chinese studies introduced her to Chinese herbs at an early age and the importance of culture. The influence they provided guided her passions today.
Her functional medicine journey began years ago when she grabbed a book by Dr. Andrew Weil before boarding a plane to begin 2 1/2 years serving as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay, South America.
Inspired by Dr. Weil’s natural approach to health, she returned to the states and enrolled in medical school at LSU Health Sciences in New Orleans. In her fourth year, she spent a month rotation at Dr. Weil’s integrated medicine program in Tucson, AZ and yet felt there was more in getting to the root of an individuals health. Dr. Myers decided to do her post-grauate residency training in emergency medicine at The University of Maryland / Shock Trauma with the thought that when she eventually, intuitively found the focus she was looking for, she would have the flexibility to move quickly in that direction.
She moved to Austin and worked as an emergency room physician at University Medical Center at Brackenridge and Dell Children’s Medical Center where she had her “Aha!” moment. Wanting to get back to her roots of alternative medicine, she enrolled in a conference in New York City in February 2009 and heard Dr. Mark Hyman speak on Functional Medicine.
When he explained the idea of a comprehensive approach to health care focusing on prevention and finding the underlying cause of illness rather than simply treating the symptoms, Dr. Myers knew she had found the approach to medicine that she’d been looking for.
She introduced herself to Dr. Hyman, expressing her interest in the practice of functional medicine, and was privileged to spend a week shadowing him at his practice. After a full immersion into the practice and countless hours of training with the Institute of Functional Medicine, she is has completed all of the training to be certified in functional medicine.
Since then, Dr. Myers has become a passionate educator who believes that everyone has the ability to take charge of their health if given the right information. That’s why she offers access to extensive educational opportunities through her website, blog, podcasts, online eCourses, eBooks and her clinic. By giving everyone the knowledge to become his or her own health advocate, Dr. Myers is changing the face of functional medicine.
