Why Your Child Needs a High-Quality Multivitamin
September 12th, 2017
You did all the right things to help set your baby up for lifelong health – a nourishing diet during pregnancy, prenatal vitamins, breastfeeding and infant probiotics. It’s amazing how quickly our little babies become toddlers and preschoolers, and as they do, their nutritional needs change. In those crucial years of growth and development, it is essential for children to get the adequate amounts of nutrients. Giving your child a complete and high-quality multivitamin like my Kid’s Multivitamin Chewable will help to keep her on the path to good health.
Why Food Isn’t Enough to Meet Your Child’s Nutritional Needs
I’ve written a lot lately about how you can set your baby up for optimal health. It’s top of mind for me since I’ve recently become a mother, and I want to do everything I can to give my baby, Elle, the best start at life.
As Elle gets older, her needs for healthy growth and development will evolve. I will continue to ensure she is getting all the nutrients she needs throughout her childhood, and I encourage you to do the same for your little one. After all, meeting their needs now not only keeps their growth and development on track, but it can have a huge impact on their lifelong health and wellness.
Elle just turned 6 months old and has started having her first foods! Of course I have started her on organic vegetables, and plan to move to organic fruits and meats over the coming months. This milestone has me thinking about the importance of the food choices I make for her, as feeding your child a diverse range of real, whole foods is the most important way to keep her in good health.
Though, if you have a picky toddler at home you know this is sometimes easier said than done! A sensitive palate is not the only challenge with relying on food alone to meet your child’s nutritional needs.
We, nor our children, simply cannot get all the vitamins and minerals we need from our food, despite eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and lean protein. Modern agriculture methods have stripped our soil of nutrients, resulting in less nutritious fruits and vegetables.1
An estimated 81% of children ages 2-8 don’t get enough vitamin D in their diet (needed for a strong and healthy immune system), 65% aren’t receiving enough vitamin E (to scavenge free radicals), and 23% are low in calcium ( for healthy bones).2 A good multivitamin can bridge this nutritional gap.
On top of this, in our modern world, we are all exposed to thousands of environmental toxins everyday.3 This added stress on your child’s little body means her nutrient needs are higher than those of a child living in our world a hundred years ago. This is another reason food alone cannot provide your child the nutrients they need, and it’s why I recommend everyone supplement with a daily multivitamin – including children.
The Problem with Many Children’s Multivitamins
Next time you’re perusing the shelves of your health food store or pharmacy, take peek at the kid’s multivitamins. So many of them have fillers, additives, preservatives, dyes and even high- fructose corn syrup! I would never give these to my daughter, so I wouldn’t want to recommend them to anyone else.
Also, many of the children’s multivitamins on the market are made using the same formulation as the adult version, just in smaller proportions. However, the specific nutritional needs of a growing and developing child are very different than those of an adult. Your child needs a multivitamin specifically formulated to meet those needs.
And, let’s face it, some children generally have picky palates. Many children are more likely to be eating fruits and less likely to be getting the nutrients they need from vegetables, such as broccoli or brussels sprouts. A high-quality children’s multivitamin is made to address those common nutritional gaps.
What to Look for in a High-Quality Children’s Multivitamin
Because of the concerns with so many children’s multivitamins on the market, I recommend doing your research before choosing the best option for your child.
When making your decision, here are a few of the top vitamins and minerals to look for, as well as additives and ingredients to avoid.
Top vitamins and nutrients to look for in your child’s multivitamin:
- Vitamin A – for normal growth and development, healthy skin, eyes, and optimal immune function, as well as bone and tissue repair
- B vitamins – to support healthy immune function, energy, and emotional wellbeing, in their pre-methylated forms for easier absorption and to address MTHFR mutations
- Vitamin C – for a healthy immune system, muscles and connective tissue, and skin
- Vitamin D – to support a healthy immune system and strong bones, paired with vitamin K2 because the two work in tandem to ensure calcium ends up safely in your child’s bones rather than in her arteries
- Calcium – for strong bones
- Iron – for healthy red blood cells and to build muscles
Ingredients to avoid in your child’s multivitamin:
- Sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners
- Dyes, preservatives, fillers, and synthetic ingredients
- Common inflammatory ingredients – gluten, dairy, corn, soy
Because I found it so difficult to find a good multivitamin for children that met all their specific needs and didn’t contain those fillers and preservatives, I decided to formulate my own. My Kid’s Multivitamin Chewable is what I recommend for my pediatric patients and for my adult patients to give their children, and what I will give my daughter, Elle, when she’s old enough.
Each tablet contains 23 important vitamins and minerals, including micro-nutrients, to support a strong and healthy immune system. I made sure that the vitamins were in their most active and highly bioavailable forms, so they can be easily absorbed and not just flushed out of your child’s system. The B vitamins in this multivitamin are all pre-methylated which is very important if your child has issues with methylation or has one or more MTHFR mutations.
Of course, as with all of my supplements, Kid’s Multivitamin Chewable is free of allergens – no gluten corn or soy, and has no preservatives, additives or high-fructose corn syrup. Also, you’ll be happy to know, it’s been taste-tested by kids and they love it! Even your little picky eaters will enjoy the mixed berry flavor.
I never want a multivitamin to replace eating nourishing whole foods rich in vitamins and minerals. However, even with the most perfect diet, it’s unlikely your child is getting all the nutrients she needs for optimal health during those key developmental years. Starting everyday with my Kid’s Multivitamin Chewable is going to give her a head start to a lifetime of good health.
As with adults, I believe all children would benefit from taking a high quality multivitamin along with probiotics, vitamin D/K2 and omega 3 fatty acids. I have created an Essentials for Kids Kit in order to make it convenient for you to get everything your child needs all in one place.
