Why Food Isn’t Enough to Meet Your Child’s Nutritional Needs

I’ve written a lot lately about how you can set your baby up for optimal health. It’s top of mind for me since I’ve recently become a mother, and I want to do everything I can to give my baby, Elle, the best start at life.

As Elle gets older, her needs for healthy growth and development will evolve. I will continue to ensure she is getting all the nutrients she needs throughout her childhood, and I encourage you to do the same for your little one. Elle just turned 6 months old and has started having her first foods! Of course I have started her on organic vegetables, and plan to move to organic fruits and meats over the coming months. This milestone has me thinking about the importance of the food choices I make for her, as feeding your child a diverse range of real, whole foods is the most important way to keep her in good health.

Though, if you have a picky toddler at home you know this is sometimes easier said than done! A sensitive palate is not the only challenge with relying on food alone to meet your child’s nutritional needs.

We, nor our children, simply cannot get all the vitamins and minerals we need from our food, despite eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and lean protein. Modern agriculture methods have stripped our soil of nutrients, resulting in less nutritious fruits and vegetables.1

An estimated 81% of children ages 2-8 don’t get enough vitamin D in their diet (needed for a strong and healthy immune system), 65% aren’t receiving enough vitamin E (to scavenge free radicals), and 23% are low in calcium ( for healthy bones).2 A good multivitamin can bridge this nutritional gap.

On top of this, in our modern world, we are all exposed to thousands of environmental toxins everyday.3 This added stress on your child’s little body means her nutrient needs are higher than those of a child living in our world a hundred years ago. This is another reason food alone cannot provide your child the nutrients they need, and it’s why I recommend everyone supplement with a daily multivitamin – including children.

The Problem with Many Children’s Multivitamins

Next time you’re perusing the shelves of your health food store or pharmacy, take peek at the kid’s multivitamins. So many of them have fillers, additives, preservatives, dyes, and even high- fructose corn syrup! I would never give these to my daughter, so I wouldn’t want to recommend them to anyone else.

Also, many of the children’s multivitamins on the market are made using the same formulation as the adult version, just in smaller proportions. However, the specific nutritional needs of a growing and developing child are very different than those of an adult. Your child needs a multivitamin specifically formulated to meet those needs.

And, let’s face it, some children generally have picky palates. Many children are more likely to be eating fruits and less likely to be getting the nutrients they need from vegetables, such as broccoli or brussels sprouts. A high-quality children’s multivitamin is made to address those common nutritional gaps.

What to Look for in a High-Quality Children’s Multivitamin

Because of the concerns with so many children’s multivitamins on the market, I recommend doing your research before choosing the best option for your child.

  • Vitamin A – for normal growth and development, healthy skin, eyes, and optimal immune function, as well as bone and tissue repair
  • B vitamins – to support healthy immune function, energy, and emotional wellbeing, in their pre-methylated forms for easier absorption and to address MTHFR mutations
  • Vitamin C – for a healthy immune system, muscles and connective tissue, and skin
  • Vitamin D – to support a healthy immune system and strong bones, paired with vitamin K2 because the two work in tandem to ensure calcium ends up safely in your child’s bones rather than in her arteries
  • Calcium – for strong bones
  • Iron – for healthy red blood cells and to build muscles

Ingredients to avoid in your child’s multivitamin:

  • Sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners
  • Dyes, preservatives, fillers, and synthetic ingredients
  • Common inflammatory ingredients – gluten, dairy, corn, soy
