A new year presents a new opportunity to take back your health. The Covid-19 pandemic presented us with many challenges in 2023. Research suggests we exercised less and the ease of food delivery and curbside pick-up caused many of us to eat junky take-out instead of cooking fresh, nutrient-dense meals at home.

There’s no better time than today to start working to achieve your health goals. If you’re looking to add one or two supplements to your daily routine or go all-in to revamp your regimen, here are my top picks for supplements essential to help you to achieve optimal health and wellness in 2023.

The Myers Way® Multivitamin

This one is essential in my mind! Due to a decrease in our Earth’s soil and water quality, it’s hard to get enough nutrition from food alone. As a result, many of us are getting fewer nutrients than ever before. A study at the University of Texas analyzed nutritional data from the US Department of Agriculture. This data compared 43 different fruits and vegetables for two periods that were 50 years apart. The study found significant declines in calcium, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and vitamin C

That’s why I recommend including The Myers Way® Multivitamin in your daily supplement plan to give you the nutrient boost you need, and aren’t getting from your food, to support general health and wellness.

I spent over a decade perfecting The Myers Way® Multivitamin so that it included essential vitamins in a bioavailable form that the body can absorb and utilize efficiently. This means methylated B vitamins, chelated minerals, vitamin D as cholecalciferol, and much more.  You need these critical nutrients to get back your vitality and support detoxification, especially with the number of toxins and stressors we all experience in our daily lives.

That’s not all. Unlike many other formulas, this multivitamin has optimal levels of selenium, zinc, and iodine to support thyroid health and contains 100% of the folate you need each day. And of course, I don’t include any of the added sugars or colorings you might find in other multivitamins.

Everyone should be taking a multivitamin as a foundation for optimal health and wellness, and I recommend you look for one that has vitamins and minerals in the levels and forms your body needs and can use.

Vitamin D3/K2

I saw thousands of patients with sub-optimal vitamin D3 levels in my clinic, especially during the winter months. Sunshine is a great source of vitamin D3, however, as people spend less time outdoors due to the colder temperatures (and current pandemic), it’s critical to supplement with vitamin D3.

Vitamin D3 plays a significant role in supporting your immune system. To support optimal health and a well functioning immune system, your vitamin D3 levels should be around 60-90 ng/mL. You can test your levels through your doctor or in the privacy of your home through a service such as My Labs For Life.

Vitamin D3 also regulates serotonin and dopamine production. 1 It’s a natural solution to support a positive mood during times of major stress (which was all of 2020 for most of us).

If all that weren’t enough, taking a vitamin D3/K2 supplement also helps support and maintain optimal bone density. As vitamin D3 works intrinsically with vitamin K2 to ensure that calcium is mobilized correctly around your body, I made sure that my vitamin D3 supplements include this essential cofactor.

Due to these benefits and many more I recommend Vitamin D3/K2 to everyone.

Probiotics

In times of unease and stress, opportunistic bacteria multiply and thrive throughout your body. Stress can make your intestinal barrier weaker and allow gut bacteria to enter the body and create an imbalance between good and bad bacteria.2 Your immune system takes care of most of these bacteria however that means that it’s constantly in overdrive which can lead to chronic illness and even autoimmunity. Therefore, it is critical to reestablish a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in your gut.

When we are in optimal health, we live symbiotically with the bacteria in our bodies. If balanced, they promote optimal digestion and immunity, both of which are crucial to every aspect of your health and well being. That’s why I suggest adding a probiotic into your supplement plan this year to support an optimal balance of synergistic bacteria to optimize your digestive health.

Probiotic 100 Billion and Probiotic 30 Billion capsules contain 14 of the most essential, clinically researched, and third-party tested bacteria strains. I chose them to provide optimal support for your body’s immune and inflammatory response. Probiotic 100 Billion is designed for maximum support. You won’t see very many products on your local store shelves that have this potency level AND don’t need to be refrigerated. Probiotic 30 Billion is available for those that find they can not tolerate a high level of probiotics and provides an excellent maintenance dose.

If you can believe it, there are certain situations where standard lactic-acid-based probiotics can actually cause more complications than they solve. SIBO, or Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, is one of those situations.

Because SIBO is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small bowel often caused by chronic constipation or challenges with the nervous system, adding more lactic acid based bacteria into the small intestine can often be adding more fuel to the fire.

This is why I recommend Primal Earth Probiotic to anyone who has SIBO, suspects SIBO may be at the root cause of their issues, or simply doesn’t tolerate most probiotics.

Primal Earth Probiotic is a soil-based probiotic which contains three strains of soil-based bacteria that mimic the key probiotics available in our Paleolithic ancestors’ diets. Our Paleo ancestors got much of their beneficial probiotic microorganisms from their environment and their food. In our hyper-hygienic modern lives, we are so far removed from the dirt that grows our food that we’re missing out on some of the crucial microorganisms and probiotics that populate our soil which used to populate our own microbiomes.

Whichever potency or type of probiotic you take, you can feel confident that you’re taking care of your gut bacteria and working toward achieving optimal health.

Leaky Gut Revive®

Leaky gut is a term used to describe an intestinal barrier that has become, quite simply, too permeable. In short, this means that your intestinal wall is no longer doing an adequate job of keeping antigens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and potentially allergenic or inflammatory proteins from food out of your bloodstream and lymph. It is a problem that I consistently saw in my patients in my clinic and hear from my community now.

There are many reasons you may have developed leaky gut, including a diet high in processed sugar and unhealthy fats, gluten, and increased physical or emotional stress. There are many more causes and a whole host of symptoms. Most of the time leaky gut presents as digestive issues like bloating or constipation however a lot of us may actually have leaky gut without any symptoms at all. Or the symptoms may not be clear such as skin issues, brain fog, mood imbalances or food sensitivities.

Who hasn’t experienced increased stress or indulged in gluten in 2020? Leaky gut is such a widespread issue that I recommend that everyone starts their day with Leaky Gut Revive®.

Leaky Gut Revive® contains a high concentration of L-glutamine, an amino acid that helps seal the tight junctions in your intestinal walls, along with aloe vera to replace the lost mucus in your gut, deglycyrrhizinated licorice and other powerful gut-repairing ingredients.

Leaky Gut Revive® mixes quickly into water, juice or smoothies so this is an easy one to add to your routine.

Double Chocolate Paleo Protein

Your optimal health is reliant upon sufficient intake of protein on a daily basis. Proteins contain amino acids that are needed to help build and repair every single structure in your body. High-quality protein also supports healthy lean muscle mass by providing your body with the amino acids it needs to maintain and build new muscle. Your body uses the amino acids in protein for cell regeneration and repair, as well as supporting sustained energy levels and healthy blood pressure.

Double Chocolate Paleo Protein powder is my custom formulated protein powder that contains a whopping 21 grams of protein per serving, and is gluten-, dairy-, and sugar-free. It is sourced from non-GMO, hormone- and antibiotic-free, grass-fed beef. This protein powder is also low in carbohydrates, so it can even be enjoyed while on a keto diet.

If you love chocolate milkshakes and smoothies, this is the perfect protein powder to add to your diet to ensure you’re getting optimal levels of protein.

Liposomal Curcumin

Curcumin is a compound found in turmeric, a natural spice with scientific evidence linking it to an assortment of health benefits. 4

Turmeric has been found to support the body’s inflammatory response by limiting the action of free radicals in the body.

As great as curcumin is for you, there are a couple factors to consider when determining how best to consume it:

  • Turmeric is not easily absorbed by your body
  • Research has shown that only 1% is absorbed through the digestive system.
  • You’d have to eat two pounds of turmeric root to reap the full benefits of curcumin that clinical trials have demonstrated.
  • Most turmeric supplements contain very little curcumin.

That’s why I decided to formulate my own curcumin supplement. Liposomal Curcumin provides hundreds of times more bioavailable curcumin than many turmeric-based supplements. This is because the curcumin in Liposomal Curcumin is wrapped in a healthy fat liposome, making it much easier to absorb through your digestive system and work effectively in your body. It absorbs at least five times better than any other standardized curcumin supplements available on the market today.

Wishing you great health in the new year!
