What is Histamine Intolerance! What causes it, foods to avoid and where to find Diamine Oxydase.
I have extreme itching attacks. So much that I cannot even walk a straight line due to scratching!! It is almost unbearable!!! Lasts about 2-4 hours!! Prevents me from sleeping!!
Is bone broth high in histamines?? Will Diamine Oxydase help symptoms? Am I deficient??

    Hi there,

Here is a great article on Histamine Intolerance written by Dr. Myers: http://www.amymyersmd.com/2016/02/everything-you-need-to-know-about-histamine-intolerance/

Bone broth is high in histamine. DAO can definitely help with symptoms but ultimately you would want to find the root cause which could be a variety of things. I definitely recommend checking that article out!

Thank-you Dana. I have read the article but did not see anything about bone broth. I also do not see how to find out root cause…..just eliminate the high histamine foods. I am doing that…but what else can it be?

Often times when I’m having a smoothie that likely has banana and avocado in it, I get a very slight runny nose. Sometimes there’s a tiny bit of tenacious mucus and sometimes I feel it plugging my ears but it is a very, very scant amount. Over the years I do have trouble with severe vertigo with nausea and vomiting and I’m wondering if it is related to a histamine intolerance. All these years I was thinking it was related to coffee, chocolate, salty foods. The neurologist thought it was a vertigo variant of migraine but learning about histamine intolerance I’m wondering if that is the problem. I am on the auto immune illumination diet but I am enjoying the avocados and bananas in the smoothies. Do you think even that small amount could cause the issue? Also, I am taking microbe clear because I am suspect about SIBO.

It sounds like there are a lot of different things that are going on so it is hard to pinpoint what might be causing your symptoms based on treatment, diet, etc. But it does sound like after every time you have bananas and avocados, you are having these symptoms which could link to a current histamine intolerance. You might try subbing these things for other fruits and seeing if you have the same reaction after your smoothie!

It could be a variety of things! As mentioned, it could be related to food allergies, gut dysbiosis or bacterial overgrowth, leaky gut, or even genetic mutations in your DAO gene.

    Thank-you!
Question I have is where do I begin if I suspect adrenal failure, hypothyroidism, leaky gut or histamine intolerance! Every diet is totally different…some can eat nuts, seeds, avocados, etc, and even no mention of gluten for adrenal fatigue! Where do I begin?

Great question and ultimately is very much targeted to your lifestyle and needs! I definitely don’t think there is one good blanket diet for everyone 🙂 This may be hard to explain over the community forum so for more guidance I would definitely look into a wellness coaching session with me. However, to briefly explain, you obviously would not want to eat foods like nuts or avocado that are causing histamine reactions. I would treat them almost like a “sensitivity” or “allergy” until the problem is resolved. With leaky gut, it can be helpful to remove grains or legumes for a period of time will adding in good gut healing supplements. This leaves you with focusing on good sources of non-starchy vegetables, lean proteins, and starchy vegetables. Low histamine fruit also is included but you would want to be sure to pair these with fats or proteins (or meals) in order to help blood sugar with adrenal fatigue.

As you can see, it can get pretty complicated and ultimately we would want to tailor it to you and your needs to possibly give a little and take a little to meet all of your concerns.

    Thank-you Dana.
It seems that everywhere you look, leaky gut seems to be the common denominator! Perhaps I should start there….I have cut out sugar, dairy, all medications, alcohol and caffeine and gluten for the past 5 weeks but still have excema, hair loss, pain and fatigue. Autoimmune disease Fibromyalgia! I also have chronic insomnia, getting 1 to 2 hours sleep per night, and chronic anxiety and stress!! It is awful! I am just in a muddle!! Nothing seems to help!!

I think that is a great place to start. It’s a hard journey for sure!

      Hi Dana
Is the Leaky Gut program listed in the Thyroid Connection book?
Could you tell me more about your wellness coaching….I am very interested, if you think that this will help!

Regarding wellness coaching, right now Dr. Myers is not taking any new patients but we do have a waiting list. In the meantime, we are also offering wellness coaching which can help you get to the root of what all is going on by looking at diet, lifestyle factors, and even doing some testing to see what is going on! You can find more here.

There are various parts of the book that discuss Leaky gut and what to do to help out with it. Dietary parts can be found around page 163-169.
